Exploratory Radiomic Analysis of Conventional vs. Quantitative Brain MRI: Toward Automatic Diagnosis of Early Multiple Sclerosis

چکیده

Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) is poorly sensitive to pathological changes related multiple sclerosis (MS) in normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and gray (GM), with the added difficulty of not being very reproducible. Quantitative MRI (qMRI), on other hand, attempts represent physical properties tissues, making it an ideal candidate for quantitative medical image analysis or radiomics. We therefore hypothesized that qMRI-based radiomic features have diagnostic value MS compared cMRI. This study investigated ability cMRI (T1w) qMRI extracted from (WM), NAWM, GM distinguish between patients (MSP) healthy control subjects (HCS). developed exploratory classification models a dataset comprising 36 MSP HCS recruited CHU Liege, Belgium, acquired qMRI. For each type region interest, diagnosis were training subset validated testing subset. Radiomic based entire externally open-source datasets 167 10 MSP. Ranked by best performance was achieved whole WM. Here model magnetization transfer (a qMRI) yielded median area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) 1.00 sub-cohort. type, models, AUCs 0.79 (0.69–0.90, 90% CI) NAWM 0.81 (0.71–0.90) GM. The external validation T1w AUC 0.78 (0.47–1.00) WM, demonstrating large 95% CI low sensitivity 0.30 (0.10–0.70). indicates radiomics could provide efficient information using be useful fast automated check conventional WM abnormalities once acquisition reconstruction heterogeneities been overcome. Further prospective needed, involving more data better interpretation generalization results.

[Approaches to segment multiple-sclerosis lesions on conventional brain MRI].

Different sets of criteria are currently used for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Some are based on clinical features, while others are related to imaging findings. Among the image processing systems, specific criteria include spatial dissemination of lesions in one image or their temporal dissemination in images acquired at different time points. In addition, the evolution of the les...

Rate of brain atrophy in benign vs early multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND Benign multiple sclerosis (MS) is defined by minimal or no disability after many years of observation, therefore a less degenerative disease process is suspected to be present in this subset of patients. OBJECTIVE To compare brain atrophy rates in patients with long-standing benign MS vs typical early MS. DESIGN A longitudinal prospective cohort study and a retrospective database...

Delayed phases of contrast MRI, can it be valuable in multiple sclerosis active phase diagnosis?

Background: Observing the enhancing plaques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most valuable diagnostic modalities in confirming the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), its recurrence and for better detection of active disease. Since active lesions discovery can improve designating diffusion in time diagnosis of MS and controlling disease activity, and there is not any definite...

[MRI diagnosis of multiple cerebral sclerosis].

OBJECTIVE To investigate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) feature of multiple cerebral sclerosis (MS) for better understanding and diagnosis of this disease. METHODS The MRI data of 32 patients with MS were reviewed. Conventional scanning with T1WI, T2WI, Flair sequence was performed, and 26 patients underwent Gd-DTPA enhanced scanning. The MS plaques were analyzed for their locations, si...

Introduction: Voxel based morphometry is a type of statistical parametric mapping that can be used to investigate the effect of diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease or other agent such as skills on brain structure (white matter, gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid). The aim of this study is evaluate the effectiveness of this method in detection of differen...
